Poetry is code, short hand, almost personal meaning written down in hopefully with a rhythm, rhyme, cadence or beat using understandable symbols and concrete words of meaning. Add to this, a shortness or sparse use of intensifying words and you have a flash video.
This flash of words moves quickly. Poetry often has to be read twice or even three times before the reader can take away something meaningful. This all makes poetry hard to grasp. Theoretically, since we live in a "want-it-now" or "yesterday" culture, you'd think poetry can keep pace. Yes, in songs on the radio this occurs. We get it right away. Aha! Great! Wasn't that cute or wonderful! It touched me deep inside.
Yet poetry, most written poetry, isn't that accessible. This development, I feel, is how poets write poetry today. Poetry can be accessible. Words used in simple and clear ways makes good poetry. I try to write accessible poetry with meaning and insight.
