WEAK OR BAD POETRY?

*   HOW TO AVOID WEAK OR BAD POETRY?
*   HOW TO RECOGNIZE WEAK OR BAD POETRY?


If you know how to avoid writing weak or bad poetry, you'll easily recognize weak or bad poetry.  Most often weak or bad poetry reads like a greeting card--it's not specific enough because greeting cards must appealing to millions and millions of people.  A poetry card would never sell well. 

Most begin writing poetry by simply listing their feelings.  This is not enough to avoid weak or bad poetry.  Why?  You might write an awesome poem by accident one time and then write weak or bad poetry the next time! 

Next recognize most poets go through phases.  You write better and better and better as you continue writing poetry.  Don't give up on your poetry!  Your craftsmanship (structure) and techniques (creativity) will improve over time.  Some people will improve overnight; others may take a little bit more time.  Improving anything is based on the Goddess and Gods gifting you and your personal efforts.

Tap into your intuition if you want to write a poem with a sense of beyondness.  Trust your guts as you write, delete, change or keep poetry lines. 



*   IT'S WIDELY RECOGNIZED A BAD POEMS:

1.  LACKS TRUE FEELING/EMOTION
You read it and say, "Yeah, I felt that way before, ho hum."

2.  LACKS CONTENT (trite subject treatement; far too mysterious to understand)
You read it and say, "So she had to go to school." Or "I didn't understand a word of what that was all about."  "Too many cliches."

3.  LACKS BEAUTY  (inexact imagery, wording)
You read it and say, "Nothing memorable in this.  Not cool lines.  None of the lines wowed me.  Cliches.  No metaphors or similies.  No sounds in this poem.  (Usually Free Verse that) sounds like prose broken up with line breaks with a pithy little point of discovery at the end."

4.  LACKS CRAFTSMANSHIP (structure)
You read it and say, "Okay, this is all over the place structure wise.  Where does one thought begin and another end?  Where's the ending?" 

5.  LACKS AND TECHNIQUE (creativity)
You read it and say, "No alliteration, no rhymes, no rhythm, no cool words used, no creative use of punctuation."

6.  LACKS A SENSE OF BEYONDNESS (trite)
You read it and feel as if you didn't go anywhere.  Time did not stop.   You didn't forget to wash your dog and sweep the fkitchen and take out the trash.


*   AVOIDING BAD POETRY STEPS

1. Provide unique facts and situations
2. Provide  unique slants or viewpoints on a topic we all know about
3. Use strong verbs
4. Use specific details – naming, caparing, listing.
5. Use concrete objects
6. Memorable phrases
7. Use striking images
8. Use TTTSSS, Taste, Touch, Textures, Sounds, Smells, Sight
9. Use tension to make us want to know what will happen next?
10. Use specific words
11. Use either past, present or future to relay events
12. Use listing, brainstorming, mind-mapping for example:
a. list 9 ways       then put one or two of these into your poem
b. list 9 objects    then put one or two of these into your poem
c. list 9 places     then put one or two of these into your poem
d. list 9 meaningsthen put one or two of these into your poem
e. list 9 feelings   then put one or two of these into your poem
f. list 9 tastes      then put one or two of these into your poem
g. list 9 touches   then put one or two of these into your poem
h. list 9 smells     then put one or two of these into your poem
i. list 9 textures    then put one or two of these into your poem
j. list 9 sights       then put one or two of these into your poem
13. Pick random object in dictionary and put in poem
14. Listen to your favorite song or any song.  Then select random words from
the song or write words the songs reminds you of or inspires.  Put these
words in your poem.

OR COMPUTER KEYBOARD TO SCREEN AND WRITE YOUR POEM!
